Devansh began his journey toward the TEF Canada exam as a complete beginner in French, driven solely by his goal of immigration. Initially filled with self-doubt, he found his motivation grew, and the process became "much more than that." Within a year, he successfully achieved a CLB 7+ score, exceeding that level in multiple sections of the exam, a success he largely attributes to the BBarters program.
His discovery of BBarters on YouTube was pivotal. He was immediately impressed by the clear explanation of concepts, especially the use of Devanagari for pronunciation, which made the language feel "accessible and not intimidating." Despite a two-month hesitation, Devansh committed fully to the program, establishing a disciplined routine of studying consistently every single day. In the initial phase, he dedicated nearly seven hours a day, which later shifted to six, and then three to four hours for more targeted preparation after his first attempt.
The self-paced video lessons of the BBarters program were a key advantage, allowing him to quickly cover familiar topics and revisit difficult ones. Devansh found the grammar breakdowns, particularly for complex topics like the subjunctive, "extremely clear." He also credits a simple habit: writing everything by hand, noting that "the act of writing helped me retain the concepts better."
Devansh’s first attempt, after about seven and a half months, served as a crucial reality check. While his reading and listening skills were decent, his writing and, most notably, his speaking score were weak. Realizing that expression was his biggest gap, he completely changed his strategy.
To conquer his speaking weakness, he partnered with another student for daily 30–45 minute practice sessions. They focused on structure, tracking their questions and answers, and correcting each other. Devansh realized the power of this consistent effort, stating, "I realised that you don’t need perfect correction from a teacher every time—consistent speaking practice is what actually builds confidence and fluency." He also used AI tools like ChatGPT to write his own answers and receive corrections, improving his structure and checking his NCLC level without relying on discouragingly perfect model answers.
The second attempt yielded significant improvements, with Devansh achieving a C1 level in reading and writing, and a B2–C1 level in listening and speaking. The most dramatic success was in his speaking score, which moved from a very low level to a strong CLB score.
Reflecting on his journey, Devansh highlights the importance of a few key habits:
Staying consistent every day, which was "far more effective than studying only on weekends."
Regularly practicing speaking, even with fellow students.
Writing his own content and improving it step by step.
Beyond the scores, Devansh found an unexpected passion. Although he started purely for immigration, he gradually began to genuinely enjoy the language, watching French series and listening to music.
