TEF Canada vs TCF Canada: Which Exam Should You Take?

TEF Canada and TCF Canada are both accepted for Express Entry, and neither is simply easier. This guide compares who runs each exam, how they are structured and how to choose based on your strengths, test-centre access and preparation time.

Quick answer: Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada are approved for Canadian immigration and both test listening, reading, writing and speaking. Neither is universally easier. The best choice is the one whose format suits you the most depending on your weakest skill.

What they have in common

  • Both are French-language tests accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Express Entry.
  • Both assess four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • IRCC converts the results into NCLC/CLB levels, and you need NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills to earn the French bonus points (see How Many CRS Points Does French Give in Express Entry?).
  • Results are only valid for a limited time (currently two years for immigration purposes), so plan your exam date around your application.

Key differences

Who runs the exam

TEF Canada is administered by the Paris Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI Paris Île-de-France). TCF Canada is run by France Éducation international (FEI). Both have approved test centres in India and around the world.

Scoring

The two exams use different scoring scales for each skill. IRCC publishes an official conversion table from each exam's scores to NCLC/CLB levels, so always check the score you need for your target level rather than comparing raw numbers between exams.

Task format

Listening and reading are multiple-choice in both. Writing and speaking differ in their tasks and timings. As a general guide, TEF Canada writing and speaking are each split into two sections, while TCF Canada uses three tasks for each. Check the latest official candidate guide before you book, as formats can be updated.

How to choose

  1. Check seats and dates first. In many cities one exam has earlier slots than the other. A date you can actually get is often the deciding factor.
  2. Try a practice paper of each. Spend an hour on a sample of both. Most learners quickly feel which format is more comfortable.
  3. Consider your weakest skill. If speaking is your weak point, we suggest TEF over TCF. Whereas if Writing is your weakest skill, we would rather have you prioritize TCF Canada.
  4. Commit to one. Switching late wastes preparation time. Whichever you pick, do full timed simulations.
